Polo T-Shirts is still in Fashion
Men have always been seen wearing collared, piqued cotton shirts with a few buttons on the placket, and maybe a pocket or two. These are nothing but tennis shirts or golf shirts, most commonly known as Polo Shirts. They have been around a long time and are one of the go-to options in men’s wardrobes.
A peek into the history of Polo Shirts for men
It is widely believed that the popular Polo Shirts were first designed by Jean Rene Lacoste, the French Tennis champion. In those days, the official tennis attire used to be quite uncomfortable and impractical for the players. Mr. Lacoste designed his own version, which looked quite similar to the modern-day Polo Shirts, in order to give himself, increased comfort and mobility while playing. He went on to become an entrepreneur and created the famous clothing brand Lacoste, with its trademark crocodile emblem. Although primarily designed for tennis players, these short sleeved, buttoned, knit-cotton shirts were soon adopted in other sports like polo and golf. With time, people started referring to them as Polo Shirts, and the story of Lacoste and his tennis shirts was all but forgotten. Surprisingly, even tennis players started referring to these shirts as ‘Polo Shirts’, though it was in fact created as an apparel for tennis players.
It is also believed that when the British Army in late 19th century India discovered the game of Polo in the north-eastern state of Manipur, they realised that their dresses are unfit for the fast paced game in the tropical climate. They created their own version of a buttoned-collar shirt to prevent the flapping of the collars during the game. This design caught the fancy of Brooks Brothers US firm, who went on to design a formal buttoned-collar shirt that revolutionised menswear.
Modern designers and brands have also contributed to its immense popularity, and today there would hardly be a man without a single Polo Shirt in his closet. It is hard to believe that for the first few decades, Polo Shirts were only white in colour! It was in the 1950s that further colours were introduced!

So, what is the reason that this garment has been in style for almost a century now? Why is it that Polo Shirts for men continue to stand strong in the men’s fashion industry? Choosing a Polo Shirt
These shirts can be made of natural and synthetic fibres, or a blend of both. Depending on the occasion and the weather, you can choose a material that suits you best. For example, for participating in a sporting event, you may go with a blend suitable for athletic wear, but for the casual Fridays in office, it better to go with a pique cotton or a blended cotton one.
The ideal length of a Polo Shirt is a few inches below your trouser belt but not lower than half the length of your fly. If it is too short, you won’t be able to tuck it in when required. On the other hand, if it is too long, you will never be able to wear it un-tucked. The sleeves should be at least an inch above your elbow, somewhere near the middle of the bicep muscles.
Body-hugging clothes may be a fad now, but for a Polo Shirt, one must never go for a fit that is too tight. The Polo Shirt should be a snugly fit – not loose but not too taut either. If you want to show off your arm muscles, then the sleeves can be worn short and fit, with the rest of it sitting comfortably on you.
When it comes to colours, it is best to have a few solid & sombre shades in your repertoire, along with some bright and funky ones. Go with colours that suit your skin tone and are appropriate for the occasion.
As you can see, Polo Shirts for men have become a fashion classic and are here to stay. Whether you are buying it as a gift or packing for a trip or simply increasing your own collection, never forget the humble yet iconic Polo Shirts for men!
